Rodrigo 'el Cid' (El Cid Campeador) Díaz de Vivar Príncipe de Valencia In November 1092, El Cid began his troops in response to the siege of Valencia. In 1094 he conquered the city and surroundings and offered the conquered area to Alfonso.El Cid was now Prince of Valencia, where he, so to speak, ruled in the name of King Alfonso, but in fact had established an independent state. He reigned there until his death on 10 July of 1099. His widow Jimena continued his reign, but in 1102 she had to surrender Valencia to the Almoravids. She had the body of the Cid buried in the convent of San Pedro de Cardeña. Later he was transferred to the cathedral of Burgos, where he rests next to Jimena. The Cid soon became the national hero of Spain. King Philip II of Spain made attempts in the sixteenth century to declare him holy. The pope did not want to go into that, partly because of his sometimes brutal behavior and his opportunistic attitude towards the Muslims.
