"The viscounts of Châteaudun were one of the most powerful families of the 11th and 12th-century Loire region. Viscount Geoffrey I was the first viscount to appear consistently in the charter evidence and may have been descended from the Carolingian count of Maine. Yet the extant documents portray Geoffrey as a warrior and plunderer rather than a Carolingian aristocrat. His wife Hildegarde, however, was a member of well-established and socially prominent Tourangeau family. ... Geoffrey I of Chateaudun pursued marriages with ell-established families for his children as well.... [especially] with families whose seats of power and interest lay north of the Loire Valley."

The Breve Chronicon of Bonneval abbey records that “vicecomes Castridunensis Gaufridus” donated “alodum...Villa Siltula”, for the souls of “sue et uxoris Hermengardis”,and that “filius suus...Hugo” donated “aliam villam juxta sitam...Buxeriam”, undated[1478]. "…Gauzfredi vicecomitis…" subscribed the charter dated Mar 967 under which "Girardus Sancti Martini canonicus et sacerdos" donated property "Taiseis" to Tours Saint-Julien[1479].

The necrology of Saint-Père-en-Vallée recordsthe death "XVII Kal Mai" of "Hildegarda vicecomitissa" and her donation of "allodium de Bellomonte"[1485]. Vicomte Hugues & his wife had four children:

Archbishop Hugues had two illegitimate children by an unknownmistress or mistresses:

Il apparait dans les années 940, il semble avoir assuré les fonctions de Vicomte de Chateaudun à cette époque meme s'il n'en portait pas explicitement le titre.

Fils du précedent, il épouse Hildegarde (v970- v1020) une petite fille de Hugues I Comte du Maine. Hildegarde était veuve de Ernaud Seigneur de la Ferté(-Vidame).

Geoffroy et Hildegarde ont eu quatre enfants:

* - Hugues I Vicomte de Chateaudun, Archeveque de Tours qui suit,
* - Geoffroy II qui suit,
* - Adalaud Seigneur de Chinon,
* - une fille épouse d'Albert Abbé de Micy (lié à la famille de Belleme). Ce sont les parents d'Arnulf qui devient Archeveque de Tours en 1023 à la suite de son oncle Hugues.
