“Jacob Lallerstedt was born in Vallerstad in southern Sweden on 15 December 1796. His unsuccessful distillery caused him to flee his debts in 1819 and change his name to Letterstedt. He arrived almost penniless in Table Bay on 22 March 1820 as part of the British emigration scheme.”
Letterstedt was ’n gekultiveerde man.
“Mariendahl, formerly Questenburg and Louwvliet, was the property of the Hon. Jacob Letterstedt for many years after 1845. He established a brewery on his estate but was one of the several who sold out to the all-powerful Anders Ohlsson who established his principal factory at Mariendahl in 1900. The Western Province Cricket Club ground was opened in 1888 and the Rugby ground in 1890. The boundaries are most complicated but may be traced by following the Liesbeek, Dulwich Road, the railway, the northern fence of the cricket ground, Palmyra Road, Stegmann Road, Vineyard Road to Corwen Street and thence a line to the top of Sans Souci Road and down that road to the river.
Before concluding, mention must be made of the Albion Mill Estate which lies between the Main Road and the Liesbeek from Westerford Bridge to Schweppes’ factory. The Albion Mill was situated where the mineral water factory is now making valuable use of the clear waters of the famed Albion Spring which rises there.
Another water mill, derelict these many years, is in Boundary Road opposite the Brewery. This was Letterstedt’s or Josephine’s Mill, being named after Jacob Letterstedt’s daughter.”
“JH SMITH begs leave to inform the inhabitants of Grahamstown and vicinity that he has taken out a wholesale spirit licence, and has at present for sale, good old Cape brandy, bottled ale and Porter, and few hogsheads ofLetterstedt's superior Pale Ale and will shortly receive foreign wines and spirits which will be sold at reduced prices.”
Maria Barendina is in 1848 (MOOC 9525) oorlede. Sy is begrawe in ’n Dreyer/Letterstedt familiegrafkelder in die Wynberg NG Kerk Begraafplaas, waar ’n kleinseun van haar vorige man, Jakob Gustaaf Lettersted Dreyer, ook begrawe is. Oor hierdie grafkelder skryf Wilma Malherbe as volg op Buiteposten oor ’n uitknipsel in haar besit: “think it was published in an issue of Capensis, but it may be Cabo”:
There is for instance, Jakob Gustav Letterstedt Dreyer, owner of Kleine Schuur who founded the congregation of Rondebosch...to the left of the group (of four vault tombs in the centre of the cemetery, arranged in a fan-like fashion) a mound of rubble overgrown with weeds completed the "fan". Close scrutiny of the building material established that this was in fact the remains of a fifth vault similar in design and dating from the same period.
It was known that Marina Barendina Bekker, the wealthy widow Dreyer who subsequently married Jacob (sic) Letterstedt, had been a member of the Wynberg congregation and had been buried in the cemetery after her death in 1848. All traces of her grave had, however, disappeared. Of the many damaged graves and illegible headstones in the cemetery, none seemed worthy of her. Furthermore the date of her death and her position in the community led one to expect her to be buried in a vault. That the ruined vault in the middle was in fact her last resting place remained mere conjecture until the discovery of an old document at the back of the safe in the Wynberg Church listing the first hundred owners of burial plots in the cemetery. Heading the list are the names of the owners of the five oldest vaults, among them J.Letterstedt. Subsequent excavation of the ruin during the process of restoration revealed the remains of more than one coffin and several handles. Bearing in mind Jacob Letterstedt died and was buried in Paris, and that Maria had no children by him the question now arises as to who was interred with her in her tomb?"
Ook die bydrae oor Josephine’s Mill in The Best of the Cape Odessey Vol 1.
In the 1840s, Jacob Letterstedt, a well-connected businessman with varied interests, set up Mariendahl Brewery and Josephine’s Mill, making use of the natural spring water from Newlands Spring for the brewing of his beer. He also imported modern, updated equipment and expertise, which resulted in much better quality beer than was previously available. At the same time, there was another substantial brewing operation, Newlands Brewery, which was situated below the current Forrester’s Arms and brewed much more beer than Mariendahl Brewery.
In 1864, Anders Ohlsson came to the Cape and by 1881 had bought up a variety of commercial enterprises, one of which was a mill not far from the breweries. He had assessed that brewing had a bright future and proceeded to purchase properties in the area. In 1888, Ohlsson ended up leasing the Mariendahl Brewery and Josephine’s Mill with an option to buy all the leased properties and water rights from Newlands Spring. In this time he had also negotiated purchase of or rights to a number of other breweries in the area, namely the Martienessen Brewery, the substantial Cannon Brewery, and eventually the Newlands Brewery after the death of its owner.
Dad's gift spawns Newlands
reporter: Karen Van Rooyen
A wedding gift more than 100 years ago has become one of the world's most
popular cricket grounds. The Newlands cricket ground was once farmland.
At that time Mariendal, as it was known, belonged to Swedish immigrant
Jacob LETTERSTEDT. He founded the Mariendal Brewery, later to become South
African Breweries.
But it is thanks to a woman that Newlands was set aside for cricket.
Lydia Corinna was LETTERSTEDT''s daughter. He had given her a portion of
land next to Newlands Station as a wedding gift.
In 1887, Lydia leased this land to the Western Province Cricket Club for
£50 a year. The first game - a two-day match between Mother Country and
Colonial Born, was played at Newlands on 02 January 1888. South Africa
hostedEngland in its first Test match at Newlands on 25 March 1889.
In 1896, the cricket club bought Newlands for £3 000 and leased it to the
Western Province Cricket Association. This deal lasted until last year when
they sold it to the association for R33-million.
