RAMSELL -- Mary Edna Brown Ramsell, 90, Lucernemines, died Sunday, June 2
0, 2004, at Indiana Regional Medical Center. Born January 6, 1914, in Sal isbury, she was the daughter of Irvin and Annie Housel Brown. She was a m ember of the Homer City Church of the Nazarene. Surviving are three daugh ters, Rita Jean Burkey, Indiana; Patricia Ann Zerzoss and her husband, Jac k, Clarksburg; and Janet Louise Keener, Blacklick; two sons, Sidney Davi d, Lucernemines; and Donald James and his wife, Barbara, Homer City; 16 gr andchildren, 20 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; a sis ter, Pauline Baraniak, Boswell; a brother, Paul, Mineola, Texas. She w as preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sidney, 1976; one daught er, Emily Florence and her husband, Daniel Vandenburgh; two grandchildre n, Sherry and Daniel Vandenburgh; daughter-in-law, Edith Mae (North) Ramse ll; son-in-law, Wilfred Dean Burkey; six brothers and one sister, Rita Cra mer. Funeral services were held Thursday at Bowser Funeral Home, Homer Ci ty with Reverend Gary Smith officiating. Interment, Greenwood Cemetery.

Begun in 1935 by the Social Security Act signed into law by FDR, more than thirty million Americans were registered for the economic security sanctions by 1937. From 1937 to 1940, payments were made in one-lump sums amounts with the first amount being seventeen cents. Following amendments in 1939, the payments turned into monthly benefits and increased. Following further amendments in 1950, cost-of-living increases were awarded to those who were receiving benefits. From 1950 to the present, benefits have increased yearly in response to inflation concerning the costs of living.
