Dear Phil, Thank you for your understanding response via the GR site. I realise that, with your local historical interest, you may be interested in the attached. It is a copy of the Illuminated Address that was presented to my father on his return to the UK. He had been wounded in May 1916, just 2 weeks after earning his D.C.M. in Mesopotamia. After a recovery period in an Egyptian hospital,he was returned to Lichfield barracks late in 1916. His brother Albert John had also earned a gallantry award, the Military Medal, while serving on the Somme. Presumably as a morale boosting event, it was arranged for Albert John to be returned temporarily to Lichfield to be presented, with his brother, of the Illuminated Addresses. The actual size of the addresses are 29 inches by 21 inches. Their wife's were additionally each presented with a porcelain medallion set in gold. I hold my fathers illuminated Address but not the medallion or his service medals. I am led to believe that Albert John's I.A. and the medallion are now held by a granddaughter of Albert J's youngest sister Beatrice. Albert John, my Uncle Jack, visited us and stayed over several times when we lived in Malvern, Worcs. i n the late 1970's. He mentioned to us on more than one occasion that his life had been almost certainly saved by the Fenton presentation. This because his army group had been virtually wiped out to a man in a major attack during his absence. Somehow my father managed to keep a diary throughout his war service. Strangely this only came to light on his death as he never referred to his War experiences or the diary during his family lifetime. I have since reproduced the diary and forwarded a copy to the Staffordshire Regiments museum in Lichfield. If I find the copy on my PC I shall also attach a photograph of my father Louis James and Albert John with their father James (1860-1950) taken on the occasion of the Fenton presentation. I trust that this data will prove of some value to your research. Regards from Vince Alexander.
