In 1871 Joseph is not at home but is living as a Page Servant at Kedleston Rectory with the Curate John Barne Patch or Petch and his wife. His age is given as 16.
In 1881 Census Joseph is aged 24 and his POB is given as Kedleston. He was a gardener/domestic living at Duffield Hall in outbuildings. He was head of household at the time and there is a lodger Herbert John Hunter aged 14
In 1891 Census Joseph was aged 34, single and his POB is given as Windley. He was a gardener at Allestree Hall for Thomas William Evans a widower. He was JP and his POB is given as St Margaret's Westminster. No mention of Caroline as servant at Hall.
When they got married his address is given as West Bank Duffield.
At time of HRP's birth in 1896 Joseph was Head Gardener and was living at West Bank Cottage, Duffield Rd, Derby.
By 1901 census he was aged 45 and birthplace is given as (H)Kedleston. He was living in Breadsall at Priory Gardens as a gardener. His employer is Sir Alfred Seal Haslam of Breadsall Priory. Eliza is 40, Gwendoline 7, Harry Robert 5, Alick Wells 3 and George Wilfred 8 months.
He was head Gardener at Breadsall Priory for the MP Sir Haslam when he did an interview for Garden life in 1910.
In trying to work out how they met I discovered that Rowland Smith who was Caroline's employer in 1881was living at Duffield Hall when his son Granville was born in 1861. Joseph worked at Duffield Hall in 1881and I wanted to find out if Rowland Smith was still the owner at these times. Unable to do that ashe was in Dawlish in Devon in 1871 and at 131 Queens Gate, Kensington in 1881. However, for boht of these censuses there were no 'gentry' ion residence at Duffield Hall so it is possible that he still owned it but didn't spend much time there. By 1891 Joseph had moved on the Allestree Hall and Caroline to work for a retired clergyman named Algernon Cootes in Tunbridge Wells in Kent. The Smithswere back at 131 Queen's Gate and Duffield Hall was still under a caretaker. In the 1891 Census Caroline's brother George is living in Caledonian Rd with his wife Emma Maria so I think this is whereCaroline got married from. This seems to be the way they met and they may well have known one another for quite a while before Joseph could find a position that would allow them to marry.[Meg171005.FTW]
