Hendrik Thibaut (1601-1667) was Lord of St. Aagtekerke, Knight of St. Michael, Sheriff and Counsellor in 1633, and appointed Burgomaster and Steward or Bailiff of the West Schelde and Zeeland in 1634 and Govenor or the Dutch East India Company (V.O.C.). He was married three times: his first wife, whom he married in 1631, was Maria van Gogh, with whom he had two sons (she was painted in 1632 by Jan van Ravesteyn; sold Amsterdam, Frederik Muller, 13 april 1920, lot 63). He then married Isabella Peckius and lastly Isabella Porrenaar. His last wife and daughter were buried in the church of St. Aagtekerke, The Hague and a monument built by Rombout Verhulst (1624-1696)in 1669, commemorating them, is there today.
It was during Hendrik Thibaut’s appointment as Steward / Bailiff of the West Schalde and Zeeland that this painting was painted in 1634. The marine backdrop underlines his connection to Zeeland (being on the Dutch coast). The bible under his left arm is a symbol of his connection to the church and his title of Lord of St. Aagtekerke, Knight of St. Michael.
The book which lies open, Annales et Histoires des Troubles du Pays-Bas, is by Grotius Hugo (1583-1645). It covers the subject of the history of The Wars of Independence in The Netherlands and again symbolises his appointment as Steward / Bailiff of the West Schalde and Zeeland. A later edition of the book was published by Imprimerie de Iean Blaeu, Amsterdam, in 1662.
Pieter Nason was born in Amsterdam where he lived until 1638 before settling in The Hague in 1639, when he joined the Hague painters’ guild and where he studied under Jan van Ravesteyn. Nason was for many years a much sought-after portraitist in The Hague where he produced a substantial number of portraits from the early 1640s to circa 1680. There is evidence that he may have travelled to England in 1663 when he painted Charles II and worked at the court in Berlin from 1666-68. Nason also painted a portrait of Thibaut’s daughter Johanna in 1668.
