He was born on July 9, 1914 in Ogden, Utah to Tammo and Dievertje Vander Does Maathuis, third in a family of five children. He married Juliet Jensen on November 2, 1945 in the Logan LDS Temple. His father died in the 1918 flu epidemic and his mother developed Tuberculosis soon after so he and his siblings were placed in the Martha Society Children's Home in Ogden when he was six. He graduated from Ogden High School at the age of 16, having skipped the second grade. Steady jobs were hard to find in the early 1930's so he enlisted in the Army in 1933. In 1937, he joined the Army Air Corps. He was part of the American force that accompanied the British across North Africa in the early stages of World War II. On leaves while in that area of the world, he was able to travel to Egypt and to the Holy Land. He ended up in the heel of the boot in Italy before being shipped back to the States. He retired from the Air Force in 1955 in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from Ricks College in 1956, and from the University of Utah in 1958 with a degree in Accounting and with high honors. Using this accounting degree, he retired from the Utah State Tax Commission at the age of 65, and from his 35 year part time job at Dura-Crete at the age of 86. He was a devoted member of the LDS church. He leaves a legacy of dependability, working hard, and doing your best. He served for a total of almost 60 years as a Branch, Ward, or Stake financial clerk in Fort Worth, Texas, and South Salt Lake Stake. He was on the High Council when the Dallas Texas Stake was created in 1953. He loved to travel the US from coast to coast and from Seattle to Florida. He made one trip to Europe in 1990. He loved his family and went to great lengths to attend family functions and events in Utah, Idaho, California, Colorado, and Illinois.
Survived by wife, Juliet, daughters Arlena Camp, Phyllis (Bill) Hall, Christine (Steve) Taylor, 12 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, brother Thomas Cleary, sister-in-law Myrtle Maathuis, nieces and nephews, and the extended Jensen family.
