An inquisition, 10 Hen. 4. [1408/9], finding that Richard Corbett, of Leighton, died seized in his demesne, as of fee-tail, of the manor of Walgherton, held of the Earl of Chester, in capite, by knight’s service, yearly value 100s. ; of the manor of Hatherton, held as above, yearly value 10l. ; and of the manor of Churchecopenhale, held as above, yearly value 100s. ; also that he died seized in his demesne, as of fee-simple, of the manor of Fowke- stapelforde, held as above, yearly value 16l.; that the said Richard died a minor on the Saturday next after the Feast of the Apostles Simon and Jude, 9 Hen. 4. [29 Oct. 1407]; that Richard Corbett, of Leighton, was kinsman and heir of the said Richard, and of the age of thirty-one or more, viz., son of John son of John Corbett, Kt., great-grandfather of the said Richard Corbett, and that Alice wife of William de Brereton, junior, and sister of the said Richard Corbett, of Leighton, was next heir to the manor of Fowkestapleford, and of the age of nineteen or more [b. abt. 1389].

1410-11 Feb. 24., Richard, kinsman and heir of Dame Mary le Roos, the manor of Stapleford-Foulk being in the hands of the Earl of Chester, owing to the minority of the said Richard, and an inquisition finding that the said Richard died without heirs, the escheator of Chester is commanded to make livery of the said manor to William son of William de Brereton, Kt., and Alice his wife, sister and heir of the said Richard.

1477 June 17., Robert, livery, setting forth the finding of an Inquisition p.m., viz., that Cecilia, who was the wife of Richard Corbet, died seized, in dower, of the inheritance of Robert Corbet, of 100s. annual rent in Chirchcopnall, parcel of the manor of Chirchcopnall,of the assignment of Roger Corbet, father of the said Robert, the remainder thereof pertaining to the said Robert, then living, as heir male of the said Richard, viz., son and heir of the said Roger son of John father of the said Richard, because the said Richard died without heirs male of his body; that the said manor of Chirchcopnall was held of the Earl of Chester, by the service of a fourth part of one knight's fee, yearly value 100s.; that the said Cecilia also died seized, in dower, of the inheritance of William Brereton, Kt., then living, of eighty acres of land and ten acres of meadow, parcel of the manor of Foukestapleford, of the assignment of William Brereton, Kt., father of the aforesaid William, and Alice, his wife, sister, and heir of the aforesaid Richard Corbet; that the reversion of the said premises pertained to the said William Brereton, Kt., then living, and his heirs as kinsman and heir of the said Richard Corbet, viz., son of the said Cecilia [Alice], sister and heir of the said Richard Corbet; that the said eighty acres of land and ten acres of meadow, were held of the Earl of Chester, by the fourth part of one knight's fee, and were of the yearly value of 4l.; that the said Cecilia died on Sunday next before the Feast of Saint George the Martyr " last" past [20 April 1477].

The direct ancestor of our sheriff was Sir Grifiuith Vaughan eldest son, David Lloyd, who held the manor and lands of Leighton, near Welshpool, as early as 1469,under his kinsman, Sir William Brereton of Brereton, Cheshire. The manor of Leighton came to this Sir William through the marriage of his father, William Brereton, with Alice, daughter and eventual heiress of John Corbet of Leighton. ....

Alice Corbet, the heiress of the conjoint manors of Leighton and Binweston, by Inquisition post mortem 0f the 10th of Henry IV, 1409,1 was found to be sister and heir of her deceased brother, Richard Corbet of Leighton. The Salop Heraldic Visitations2 make them fourth in descent from John Corbet of Leighton "the last rightful Baron of Caus, reduced to a position of comparative beggary by the legal artifices of his own kindred on the one hand, and by barefaced injustice on the other" ...

Sir William Brereton, Knight, of Brereton and Leighton, the son of William Brereton and Alice Corbet, entered upon his father's lands the 13th Henry VI, 1439. His son William, mentioned in Leighton deeds, died without issue, and the line of Brereton was continued by his nephew, the son of Sir Andrew Brereton. ...

There was also a John Corbet, who by grant of Peter Corbet (II.) and his wife, Beatrix, had a grant of Binweston for the life of Beatrix. I greatly doubt whether this John of Binweston was identical with John, son of Peter (I.). Unfortunately it does not appear what was the status of Binweston on Beatrix Corbet's death in 1347 (Iaqnis. 21 Edw. III., No. 55); but there was a Sir Jolin Corbet of Binweston living in 1356, and then proposing to settle that Manor (which was his only estate) on his son John, and on Joan, his son's wife, and their issue.
