MONTEZUMA - Lenita Marguerite Aalbers, 91, of Montezuma, died Saturday, May 22, at her home. A celebration of her life will 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at First Presbyterian Church in Montezuma, the Rev. George M. Salnave officiating. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery in Pella. The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. today at the church. Watts Funeral Home in Montezuma is in charge of arrangements. Memorials: First Presbyterian Church, or Montezuma Public Library for children's books.
Lenita Marguerite Aalbers was born March 4, 1913, in Leighton in Mahaska County, to Eva (DeGues) and Julius Uitermarkt. She attended Centennial School in Leighton and graduated from Pella High School. She earned a bachelor of arts from William Penn College in May 1963, and earned an additional 18 hours of credit at Drake University. On Dec. 27, 1933, she married Gradus Dan Aalbers in Pella. They had six children. Lenita loved children and teaching. She taught for 10 years in rural school, and 21 years as a sixth-grade teacher in Montezuma. She continued tutoring children until she was 89. She enjoyed reading and poetry, especially Helen Steiner Rice and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. She also enjoyed gardening, traveling, camping and Elderhostel. She was an elder and deacon of First Presbyterian Church and a member of PW. She helped with preschool and enjoyed the birthday clubs. She was very patriotic and always flew the United States and Iowa flags.
She is survived by three children: Duane (Darlene) Aalbers of Grapeview, Wash., LaNeva (Kenneth) Gauley of Montezuma and Sandra Logue of Napa, Calif.; 12 grandchildren: Debbie (Bob) Martinsen, Doug (Linda) Aalbers, Darcie (John) Almeida, Steven (Julie) Aalbers, Nancy (Darrin) Tyree, Dennis (Pam) Aalbers, Laurie (Dennis) Selle, Cynthia (Sid) Pinney, Curtis (Suzanne Gauley, Kyle (Jill) Gauley, Lynnette (Dave) Koehn and Leah (Jon) Warner; 22 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death her parents; her husband, Dan, on Feb. 23, 1974; three sons: Donald in infancy, Glenn and Gaylen; two great-granddaughters, Glenda Gauley and Cheryl Martinsen, both in infancy; and two brothers: Clayton and Elmer Uitermarkt.
