Early life[edit]
Mary Anne MacLeod was born in the village of Tong on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, in a croft called 5 Tong (owned by her father since 1895) as the youngest of 10 children born to Malcolm MacLeod (1866–1954) and Mary MacLeod (née Smith) (1867â1963).
Her father was a crofter, fisherman and Compulsory Officer (truancy officer) and she was raised in a Gaelic-speaking household with her second language being English that she learned at Tong school where it was reported she was a star pupil.[1][2][3]
Immigration to United States[edit]
On May 2, 1930, MacLeod departed Glasgow, Scotland, aboard the RMS Transylvania arriving in New York City on May 11, 1930—one day after her 18th birthday and her declaring she intended to become a U.S. citizen and would be staying permanently in America.[1][2][3]
Arriving in America with just $50, MacLeod lived with her older sister Christina Matheson on Long Island and worked as a domestic servant for at least four years, with the 1930 U.S. Census listing her occupation as maid or domestic.[1][2][3]
Though the 1940 U.S. Census form filed by Mary Anne and Fred stated that she was a naturalized citizen, records show her naturalization did not take place until March 10, 1942.[1][2][3]
Personal life[edit]
In the early 1930s, MacLeod is reported to have met Fred Trump at a dance where they fell in love, after which they were married in January 1936, with the wedding reception for 25 guests held at the Carlyle Hotel in Manhattan. On April 5, 1937, she gave birth to their first child Maryanne, followed by Fredrick Jr. (1938–1981), Elizabeth (1942), Donald (1946), and Robert (1948).[1][2][3]
Later life and death[edit]
On October 31, 1991, 79-year-old Mary Trump was mugged and beaten near her home in Queens, New York. She sustained broken ribs, facial bruises, several fractures, a brain hemorrhage, and permanent damage to her sight and hearing.[4][5] A delivery truck driver named Lawrence Herbert apprehended her 16-year-old assailant, and Donald Trump rewarded Herbert with a check that kept him from losing his home to a foreclosure.[3]
Her husband Fred died at age 93 in June 1999.[1][2][3] MacLeod died on August 7, 2000 in New Hyde Park, New York, at the age of 88 and was buried alongside her husband and son (Fred Jr.) at Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens.[6] The death notice in her Scottish hometown newspaper, the Stornoway Gazette, read: Peacefully in New York on August 7, Mary Ann Trump, aged 88 years. Daughter of the late Malcolm and Mary Macleod, 5 Tong. Much missed
