After her husband Benjamin Schichmann died suddenly, Rose and children (Sylvia and Murray) emigrated to the US passing through Moscow (to visit a favorite aunt ) en route to Bremen (Germany). They arrived in NYC on Ellis Island (which Rose hated with a passion because they detained her for reasons that were often quite arbitrary (and demeaning). There might have been some added urgency for them to leave as Congress passed the Emergency Quota Act in 1921 which restricted immigration from Eastern and Southern European countries and later the Immigration Act of 1924 with even more of the same. They had close relatives in NY and decided to stay instead of going to Chicago where my Rose's brother Meyer lived. Edith mentioned that they were supposed to go to Chicago where Sylvia's brother Meyer lived.(Doris Jalkow has photos of them) and Sylvia visited Chicago several times when Doris was a little girl.. But their name was Misrock. Aunt Edith (Murray's wife), who Doris visited often until she died a few months ago, thought Sylvia had a sister in Chicago.

* Doris writes:
** please delete any reference that my Sylvia Schulman was born in Moscow. I don't care what the records say, I know what she said.
** Benjamin Schichmann and Rose Misrock met and were married in Odessa.
*** They met when he saw her, working as a cashier at the family-owned Turkish baths.
*** Also, Jews were essentially prohibited from living in Moscow. It was outside the Pale, so it is highly unlikely that they ever "lived there" for any period.
*** My grandfather was an importer, and Odessa is a port on the Black Sea. Please don't leave in that ambiguity. My parents were so proud of their beloved city.
