When asked what Dora's real name was, the population registers of a number of Dutch municipalities give different answers. They agree on one thing: she was born in Edinburgh on December 5, 1908. In the General Record Office for Scotland in Edinburgh is the registration of her birth. That declaration was made on December 29, 1908, by her mother, Nellie McSaley , who was unmarried and a tobacconist by trade. The girl was named Katie Terry McSaley . Because she was not born of a legal marriage, it was noted in the declaration that the child was "illegitimate". The date of birth stated in the declaration matches the Dutch data: December 5, 1908.
From a marriage certificate it can be concluded that she did not die shortly after the birth of her daughter, but was unable to care for the child for some other reason. Most likely, Katie was taken care of in the family of Theodorus Beijen senior at a young age. Theodorus and his wife Klaasje then lived in Leith, a harbour town just north of Edinburgh. When they returned to the Netherlands a few years later, they took Katie with them.
Theodorus and Klaasje returned to the Netherlands in April 1913, together with their children, and with little Katie, who was more than 4 years old. They went to live in Naarden. Theodorus reported to the town hall to be registered in the population register. However, he indicated Katie as his daughter Theodora Klaasje Beijen , born in Edinburgh on December 5, 1908. The official wrote: " Registered on his own account ". That comment applied to the entire family, but perhaps the official was especially concerned about the status of the youngest child.
The name Theodora Klaasje was of course derived from the names of Theodorus Beijen and Klaasje Lustig. According to information received from several relatives, the stepdaughter in the family circle was called Dora . That must be derived from Theodora.
After just over three months, Theodorus moved with his family from Naarden to Bussum. Dora was also entered there as Theodora Klaasje Beijen. The same happened when the family moved to Hilversum in 1918. In 1919, when Dora was ten years old, she was taken into a children's home of the Salvation Army in Naarden. That house was intended for "children who lack parental care". It is not clear why Dora went there. There are no indications that she received insufficient care in the family of Theodorus and Klaasje. There is a relationship between the Beijen family and the Salvation Army: Klaasje (Sien) Beijen, the youngest daughter of Theodorus and Klaasje, was active in the Salvation Army for decades. Perhaps it was considered better for Dora's development to grow up in that house. Two years later, in 1921, Dora moved to another children's home of the Salvation Army: Huize Raadhoven in Maarssen. There she stayed for three years, until she was over fifteen.
After her departure from the Salvation Army in 1924, Dora returned to Hilversum. This time she did not live with Theodorus senior, but with Theodorus junior, who had come to live in the Netherlands a year earlier with his wife Margaret Lynch and their children. Dora was again registered in the population register of Hilversum under the name Theodora Klaasje Beijen, but this time as the daughter of Theodorus junior. Perhaps the official who enrolled her was a little confused by the namesakes. A little less confused was another official who checked the case in 1924 or 1925 and apparently did not trust the name Theodora Klaasje Beijen. He made a separate family card for Dora and wrote on that card in bold letters as her name: Mac Saleij, Kate Terry . He also wrote: " Although, according to an unofficial statement submitted by Th Beijen Sr, the mother has renounced her child, so that she was initially called Theodora Klaasje Beijen, until the contrary is officially proven, she will remain called Kate Terry MacSaley. ".
Unfortunately, it is not known what exactly was in the statement submitted by Theodorus senior. It is also not clear whether he came up with that statement when he came to the Netherlands with Dora in 1913, or only around 1924, when an official in Hilversum started asking critical questions about her background.
In 1925 Dora left the family of Theodorus junior. She lived and worked successively at different addresses in Hilversum as a maid.
She continued to maintain good contact with the family. This is apparent from various family photos in which she appears.
In 1932 Dora married Gerrit van Dijk in Hilversum. Her correct name was on the marriage certificate: Katie Terry McSaley, and not Kate Terry Mac Saleij. It further stated that she was an "unrecognised natural under the laws of her country of England of full age daughter" of Nellie McSaley, and that Nellie was "with no known profession and residence". So apparently there had been no contact between Dora and her mother for a long time. It was probably not even known if Nellie was still alive.
Gerrit van Dijk came from Hilversum and, like his father, was a butcher by trade. Two weeks after the wedding, he and Dora moved to Laren, where Gerrit started his own butcher shop. In 1935 Dora and her husband had a son, who was also called Gerrit. After the Second World War, the Van Dijk family emigrated to South Africa. According to family reports, Gerrit van Dijk died around 1968 and his wife Dora many years later, probably between 1995 and 2000.
