Farewell to Joke Rijnen Telkamp (excerpt)
Everyone got to know Joke, recently or long ago, and has built up a relationship with her and has their own memories.
Undoubtedly, all these memories will testify to a sweet, selfless personality, averse to all appearances, looking for deeper values ·Äã·Äãin contact with the other. She had a genuine relationship with family and friends in which respect, understanding, compassion and empathy were important elements.
Joke was born on 11 February 1923 in Cuijk aan de Maas, shortly after her twin brother Ad was born. Her parents gave her the name Joanna Cornelia Maria. She particularly liked the name Joanna; it was explicitly stated at every official event that it was not Johanna. Joke grew up in the ferry house in Cuijk together with two sisters and three brothers. After primary school she completed the MULO in Boxmeer. Then another year of domestic school in Nijmegen.
Difficult times dawned for the Telkamp family with World War II; grief in 1943 when her father dies. Joke is at home and helped her mother with the housekeeping. During a long illness of her mother in the '45s and '46, it is natural for Joke to take care of the mother and the housekeeping. In the second half of the 1950s Joke started a study pedagogy in Nijmegen, which can be easily combined with care at home. It must have been during these years that she met her late husband Toon Rijnen through the many good contacts of the Telkamp family. It became an intensive exchange of letters with Toon in Brazil and the decision was gradually made to share her life with his. In December 1961 Joke leaves for Brazil; it will be the most beautiful period of her life.
They were happy; the vibrant, energetic Toon and the caring modest Joke. She got inspiring work and enjoyed the wonderful climate. Golden years for both.
After Toon's retirement, the difficult moment came, prompted by intellectual motives/considerable thinking, to say goodbye to Rio de Janeiro. Back in the Netherlands, they settled in Wijchen, in the shelter of the Martens family, which created a close, warm family bond. Life came to a standstill on a journey in our own country, at Roosendaal station. Toon was hit by a cerebral infarction. Weeks of hope for recovery followed but the end came on 8 December 1991. Joke retired to her home base, cared for Toon's spiritual legacy with great dedication and lived with her memories. After that her world became smaller and smaller, her health more vulnerable. A few years ago she was completely ready for care, she went to live in Huize St Jozef and was pampered by the excellent care of the loving staff. Her life is complete, the circle is complete. We are left with fond memories, with appreciation and gratitude for her life.
