Gerrit Kuyken's origins were in North Brabant and Gelderland, Netherlands. It Bildtse Kuikskaei The following article was written in Frisian and I translated it into English. It was printed in "De Bildtse Post" by Van Leer and De Jong, St Annaparochie. It was originally written by R.S.Roarda, Ljouwert, May 08,1961. A friend in Leeuwarden, who is part of the Genealogical society, sent me a copy. The Het Bilt Kuik Family "The family van Cruyck are named for 14 generations as Count and Countess in Burggreven. In the 14th century, they were living in Gelderland, with the family Malsen, Geldermalsen and Buurmalsen. The Cuyck family shield is in the house of "Malsen". After Maximiliaen took the Cuyck property, "The land of Cuyck" in Gelderland, in 1481, and before that in North Brabant. On August 10,1485, the Land of Cuyck was neutral domain and gave its loyalty to Holland. In 1517, the Land from Cuyck was in financial difficulties and was taken over by Floris van Egmond. In 1549, Keizer Karel V, by letter wrote that the "Land from the Cuyck" had to remain with North Brabant. In the same year, it became under the ownership of Anna van Egmond van Buren, who in 1551 became the wife of Prins Willem van Oranje. Proffessor Dr.P.Blok tells in his book, "Origination of the Netherlands People", Page 120: In the 12th century were people of small stature, to be seen by the size of the graves of the "Kuik". Page 202: some had names, for example in Brabant, "Kuik". Page 296: A gift of Geldre from the men of Kuik, who in 1323 came from Brabant and received this city from Jan III. Page 363: The Baronie of Breda in the Land of Grave and Kuik belong, on the House of Staten. On the Registration lists it says, " A Dirk Dirks II, the 17th generation son of Dirk Cornelis, was under the orders of George van Saken to live on the Bilt." This Dirk Dirks had a son, Claes Dirks (1510-1540) and he had a son Jan Claesen and he had a son Dirk Jans, who was the Bildske "Day-book writer" . This Dirk Jans had a son Cornelis Dirks and a son Bastiaen, in the 21st generation. Now this brings up that this Dirk Jans had two wives and another son Cornelis, and he named him Cuyck or Kuik. The earlier Leeuwarden Archiology Society woman, R.Visser, had information. She writes, "Out of the dairy from a Bildscher farmer in the beginning of the 17th century." The Tijdspiegel Magazine, 1902, Chapter 3, Page 411, " That this Dirck Jans was once called as Dirck Jans Cuyck." This could have been a mistake as his grandmother was a Cuycken. In the beginning of the 16th century there lived 3 brothers on "Het Bilt", Adriaen, Cornelis, and Jan Gerrits Kuycken. In later years took the name Cuyck, Kuyck, or Kuik. There also lived there KUIKEN'S WHO ORIGINATED FROM WASSENAERS AND STEVEN HUIGEN, (born about 1410). There were a few of these on "Het Bilt" as well. (Perhaps this is your line?) There weren't many Catholic's living on "Het Bilt". In the Registration book A8 from "Het Bilt", on 04 1655, were all the owners of land listed, who could vote. On St Jacobparochie, 2 Catholics were named, Mrs Sicke van Hemmema from Niesen and Marten Piers and also 19 Minnonites. In St Anneparochie, 1 Catholic Pieter Meijnerts, widower and 22 Minnonites. In Vrouwenparochie, 17 Minnonites, only owners of land. If the KUIK family, on "Het Bilt" are indeed descendants from the earlier Burggreven Kuik, we will assume so. The Biltske Kuik's, originate from GERRIT KUYCKEN, who was born about 1470. We haven't found any proof that he lived on "Het Bilt" himself. The oldest known Kuik, lived mostly in Vrouwenparochie, Friesland and around this area. This information comes from the Voters Lists. From Sannes 1, pages 456 and 464, under St Annaparochie, "In this Kavak was in 1527 and 1528 all land owners named. CORNELIS KUICK, 10m. (Morgen) 55 r. (Roerden) and also, CORNELIS KUICK and GOESSEN DIRCK. Under Vrouwenparochie, on the south corner of the middledyke (road) from Vrouwenparoc hie, by the Langestraat, in Beetgumermolen, is on the west side of the road a lane. This lane goes to "'t Huis Kuyk", the sign says. This large estate, is under the ownership of, Juffer Bierema Oosting, in Oranjewald. The south corner canal, ran past this land. It is still in place today, but it was a lot larger, 100 moargens."
