"Olof Berg, was born in 1643 to a cadet branch of a Swedish noble house. He joined the VOC in 1665, serving in Batavia and Ceylon before arriving at the Cape in 1676, serving under Governor van Goens.
As a lieutenant, he worked with the garrison and administrative officials at the then very small colony. He made several bartering trips to local Hottentot kraals, and longer bartering expeditions to the Hessequas along the Zonderend River. Among other things he traded tobacco from Mauritius, which was superior to the Brazilian tobacco that was traded previously.
On June 8, 1682 the English ship "Joanna" wrecked about 35 miles east of the Cape at Gans Bay. Berg was sent to salvage the wreck with a wagon and a diver. On his way there he stayed at "Cuylen", where he later had his residence "de Kuilen". He rescued five English sailors from a Hottentot kraal near Gans Bay. On June 27 he reached the Kleyne River at Hermanus, and on the 30th he reached the wreck. He found the bodies of four more sailors on the beach, as well as barrels of brandy and wine. The salvage also yielded the ship's bell, 613 3/4 Spanish reals, 2000 "perilese" reals, 7400 Mexican reals ; silver worth 28,302 Dutch guilders.

Berg returned to the Cape Sept 13, 1682.

In Oct 1682 Berg made a voyage North to Sandveld and Piquetberg north of the Oliphants River. The journal of this expedition is an important early record of the development of the Afrikaans language. One of the features of this journal is the lack of the word "kopje", which forced him to describe hills, mountains and bluffs, as "bergs".

In 1683 he made a second journey North, to Garies (near the>mouth of the Orange River) and the Kamiesberg, looking for the source of the Namaqualand copper. Neither he, nor Simon van der Stel on a later expedition were able to find this.

In the 18th century, Fran‡ois Duminy and Dirk van Reenen made further expeditions to Namaqualand looking for copper, but were also unsuccessful. When the copper was eventually found at Okiep in the 1840's it became the largest copper mine in the world for much of the 19th century, and was an important strategic target in the Boer War.

By 1686 Berg was on the Council of Policy for the colony.

On April 16, 1686, the Portuguese ship "Nostra Senora dos Milagros" was wrecked at Cape Agulhas near Zoetendals Vlei. The ship was under the command of the Portuguese admiral Don Emmanuel Silva, and was carrying ambassadors from the King of Siam to the courts of the King of Portugal, Louis of France, and Charles II of England. Also on board was a Portuguese trader named Jan de Paiva, with a casket of diamonds and other jewels. The story of the voyage and shipwreck is told in the manuscript "The Second Voyage of Pere Tachard", a Jesuit who was accompanying them. Paiva removed his diamonds from the wreck, and the salvage rights to the rest of the wreck were ceded to the VOC in exchange for hospitality at the Cape.

On July 9, 1686, Olof Berg, with Arent Hendrix, was sent on a salvage expedition to the wreck. He arrived there July 18. Berg swam through shark infested water out to the ship, and was the first aboard. They found still on board the slave Anthony van Mozambique, who was guarding the effects of his master, Fr. Joseph de la Gratia, a General of the Augustine order. Due to the rough seas making transportation difficult, Berg remained on board for twelve days.

A large quantity of porcelain, 8 small cannon , and 30 bales of cinnamon weighing 300 lbs each were found on board. On Aug 3 Berg reported to Simon van der Stel that most of the boxes on board had been broken open by the slaves. In late August Berg was relieved by Isaq Schrijver. The VOC sloop "Jupiter" was sent to transport cargo back to the Cape, but it ran aground. In November Berg was sent back, to help refloat the Jupiter which succeeded on Dec 4, 1686. He then returned to the Cape with 400 bales of cloth and some other cargo
In February of 1687 Berg was supervising the construction of a Council Chamber for the Stellenbosch Heemraad, when he received a midnightvisit from Arent Hendrix. Rumours had been flying around Capetown about the salvage from the wreck of the Nostra Senora dos Milagros. Arent Hendrix had sold to a burgher a gold cross set with eight diamonds, a silver filigree scent ball ( called a ruijck balletje), and a rosary of "pierre cordiaal". In February Hendrix's and Berg's houses were searched.

On April 10, 1687 Berg was interrogated by the Admiral Braams at the Court of Justice, Berg antagonized van der Stel on the topic of his reports about the wreck. Berg is imprisoned at the castle April 14. On May 5 he confesses, and returns to the company gold drinking cups and saucers weighing 30 3/4 and a flask of musk which had been buried in his garden.

On May 23, 1687 he was imprisoned on Robben Island.

On April 21, 1690, Berg is pardoned by the Heeren XVII. A letter with this news reaches the Cape on the VOC ship "Zwarte Lieeuw" onSept 19, 1690.

Berg retains his rank of lieutenant, and leaves the Cape with his wife Anna de Koning, and his daughter Christina for the VOC colony at Ceylon. His work in Ceylon is exemplary, and he returns to the Cape in 1695, and is appointed captain of the garrison at the Castle. In August he takes a residence on the Heerengracht (now Adderly St), beside the Dutch Reformed Church.

By 1697 he returns to the Council of Policy, and his signatures are a fixture on policy documents until 1712.

In 1699 a shortage of cattle at the Cape lead to Berg being sent to barter with the Sousequase and Gourisse hottentots. The Sousequa werealso known as the Chainoquas, occupying the area around Caledon. The Gouriquas lived around the Gouritz River. Berg's expedition finished with at Hequon.

By Nov 25, 1699 Berg had acquired 175 cattle and 226 sheep, which he sent back to the Cape, with a report. He returned to the CapeFeb 10, 1700. This was Berg's last official expedition.

In 1709 Berg was also on the Council of Justice, and attended the meetings that led to Governor Willem van der Stel's recall. After this he continued to serve under Gov. d'Ableing, until his retirement form publiclife in 1717.
In 1721 Berg and his wife Anna de Koning notarized a will. Berg died in 1723, his wife Anna lived at the farm "Constantia" until her death in 1732.
His son Marthinus Berg later became the landdrost of Stellenbosch, and his daughter Christina married Jacobus de Wet, the stamvader of the de Wet family in South Africa."
