MARSHALLVILLE -- Phil vanTol passed into the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, April 22, 2014, after a lengthy illness. Very recently, Phil prayed for salvation and received Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He attended Orrville Christian & Missionary Alliance Church.
Phil was born to Adriana Wilhelmina Nies (born Kern) and Antonius Johannes van Tol, Nov. 23, 1929, in Rotterdam, Holland. Growing up he was very athletic and active, participating and winning medals in bicycling, distance running and boxing. At 17, he joined the Royal Dutch Air Force, specializing in communications.
He married Cornelia "Corrie" Diamant in 1956, and on the 19th January 1957 they took the ocean liner "s.s. Nieuw Amsterdam" to the United States, landing in New York harbor, where they saw Lady Liberty for the first time. From there they traveled to Ohio by train, arriving in Orrville, where they started their family. They proudly became U.S. citizens in 1967.
Phil supported his family by working several jobs at a time including at Smith Dairy, from which he retired after 30 years of service. There he became known for his skills making cottage cheese, which was entered in worldwide competitions, winning many honors for the company. It was a physical job; he was proud of his work and he strived for perfection and quality in his end products.
He was a wonderful father, kind to his children and loved spending time with his family. Summers were often filled with camping trips, fishing and enjoying the outdoors. These activities brought many happy memories for all.
While typically a quiet man, Phil found his voice around a card table. He made many friends while playing cards. He was a stickler for the rules and truly enjoyed enforcing them. Once you got to know him, you found him very humorous. He loved to tease strangers who quickly became friends. He could be very charming and win you over easily.
Phil leaves a daughter, Renee (Jeff) Hartzler; a son, Kim (Trish) vanTol; grandchildren, Jordan (Kimberly) Hartzler, Aaron (Yana) Hartzler, Hannah Hartzler (Benjamin) Alderfer, Carly vanTol and Lexi vanTol; and a great-grandson, Josiah Hartzler.
A memorial service will be Friday, April 25 at 11 a.m. at Orrville Christian & Alliance Church, 300 S. Walnut St., Orrville, with pastor Paul Simonsen officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday from 10-11 a.m., prior to the services at the church. Online registry and expressions of condolence may be made at www.aublefuneralhome.com. Auble Funeral Home in Orrville is assisting the family.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at West View Healthy Living Transitional Care Unit for its loving care and expertise. Thanks to the home care staff from Personal Touch of Wooster. Many thanks to the church family at Orrville Christian & Missionary Alliance for its prayers, love and support.
