John/Jean was the son of Margaret of Constantinople Countess of Flanders and her 1st husband Bouchard d’Avesnes. When that marriage was dissolved,Margaret rejected her own children from that marriage and made the children of her second marriage, to William of Dampierre, her heirs in Flanders. The Avesnes children and Dampierre children fought over their rights and eventually the Avesnes children were granted Hainaut, while the Dampierre children held Flanders. nd, Holland for her nephew Floris V after his father (Adelaide's brother) William died, 1258-63, and continued to advise him after he took over. n II Count of Hainaut succeeded to Holland as well. vows or withdraw from society).Hollanduy of Avesnes e was a daughter of Floris IV, Count of Holland and Matilda of Brabant.
