BACKGROUND
Mina Kuyper was just a bit younger than Dena. She had a fall from a bed when she was an infant. When here mother died, her father held her at the funeral, but soon after, she was placed in the Redfied Hospital for the Insane.
1910 Federal Census: Mother born in Wisconsin, Father in Iowa. Mina (Nena) was 9 years old. She was listed in the census as an "inmate" at the Redfield State Hospital. Only one person on the ward was youger than she, a four year old child. Everyone else was an adult, exceptions: Four persons for which no data was available.
The census records state that she attended school ( what type, it does not say), but she could neither read nor write. She was listed as not speaking any language, while other "inmates" were listed as speaking English. She was not listed as being blind or deaf.
Mina was living at home in Boyden Iowa in 1905. Sometime between the ages of four and nine, she was admitted to the Northern State Home for the Insane. In 1913 this institution was renamed the Redfield State Home for the Feeble Minded. Mina died at the age of seventeen. She was my great grand aunt. My family never mentioned her.
