Johannes Groen was the son of Adrianna (Jantje) Vandermarel and Pieter Groen. He was born on March 26, 1826 in Zoetemeer, which is located in the province of South Holland. Johannes was a young lad of five when his father died. Within a year, his mother remarried, this time to Kornelis Vandenbos, a man who was intently helping dissident Netherlanders emigrate to America.
Johannes Groen emigated with Adrianna and her second husband. His first marriage was to 19 year old Antje van Lint in 1854. They and their 1 and a half year old son, Peter, were listed as a neighbors to his mother, Adrianna and his step brothers and sisters in the 1856 Census.
Johannas served in the Civil War along with Issac Vander Meer and Valentine Mathes in the 33rd Infantry Volunteers from Iowa. Johannes was injured in this war and suffred from his wounds throughout his life.
The family history written by the Rysdam family members leads to information regarding three of our families, the Kuypers, Vandenhoeks and Heezen families, through marriages and relationships with half- sisters and brothers. This history provides valuable insight into the lives of the pioneers, who relied largely on affiliations with family members for sustenance and safety in the early years.
Immigration into the US flourished in the mid 1800's, and almost ceased during the Civil War. Hollanders anxious to avoid conscription into the military, and some Hollanders had actually emigrated from Holland to avoid it. While foreign immigrants could legally avoid it, pressure was placed on young men to enlist. Jan Groen, Isaac Vandermeer and Valentine Mathis were enlistees. Issac Vandermeer died of disease during this war, and Jan Goen suffered from permanent disabilities. The Rysdam history states " Jan Groen had a very rugged experience during his first year in the army. His company helped build earthworks in the swamps of Arkansas and Kentucky. They worked from boats and in water; drank bad water, slept i the open, even in rainy weather; did exhausting work, cutting trees, etc. Jan was sent home on medical furlough in the spring of 1863 to recover from 'malaria poisoning, chronic diarrhea, rheumatism', etc. After several months he tried to return to his unit in Arkansas, but had to be hospitalized in Keokuk, Iowa, and later in Little Rock.
The Rysdam History also states that Jan applied for disability in 1864 and laments about struggles Nellie Rysdam Groen must have faced while John was absent, and how his disabilities must have affected the family.
John was known to have operated a saw mill, but was listed as a farmer prior to military service. Jan's homestead was about two miles northwest of Orange city, near where Dirk Vandenbos had lived prior to moving to South Dakota.
Family Relationships: Lena Heezen Kuyper had, as a brother in-law, John Groen, a great grandson of Jan Groen and Antje Van Lint (Lindt). After Lena died, her widowed husband married Gertrude Rysdam O'Brien. Other family relationships include the marriage of Ida Vandenhoek to Arie Schryver.

John Groen, an old ex-soldier and a pioneer of this county, known and respected by all, died at Rock Valley last Sunday. For many years he had been a resident of our town and had removed to Rock Valley only two years ago. His relatives have the heartfelt sympathy of all.
