D. Scholten (Dirk Jan) who has suffered for several months with enlargement of the liver died Wednesday noon aged sixty-one years. He was born in the Netherlands and came to Chicago nearly forty years ago moving to Sioux county in 1871. He leaves a wife and seven children. One son, Everett is married and three are boys at home. The daughters are Mesdames Henry Aalders and J. Cambier and Miss Hattie at home. He has a brother John near Boyden and a host of other relatives hereabout. Funeral service will be held from the Reformed church at two.

Grada, Maria 1867, Dirk Jan 1869, Maria 1871, Berendina 1874, Everett 1876, Dirk Jan 1878, Bertnardus 1881, Hendrikus 1883, Hendrika 1886. The children surviving of the mother Mrs. Henry Beltman formerly Mrs. Dirk Scholten were Elizabeth Mrs. G. H. Henry Aalders; Dena, Mrs. J. C. Cambier; both of Alton; Evert J. Scholten of Sheldon; Dr. Dirk J. Scholten of Kalamzoo MI; Burt Scholten of Holland MI; Henry M. Scholten of Boyden; and Hattie Mrs. Nick Slager of Doon.
Derk and Grada are buried togther in the Nassau Cemetary, and their relationship is established in the Dutch Genlias Marriage Register. The first of the Scholten reltives to come to America were Mr nd Mrs DJ Scholten, the parens of Evert, Bert, Mrs Cambier, Henry, Dr Scholten, Mrs G De BOer and Mrs Henry ALDERS. They arrived in chicago in 1868 and came to Sioux county in 1871 settling on the south edge of what later became Alton where Jacob Cambier now lives.
John Scholten, the brother of DJ came to America in 1869 and settled west of Boyden. He is 77 years old and in good health. The children are E J of Springfield, Herman of Hull, Mrs Menzo Scholten, Anna, Gerrit, Bert and John of Boyden, Mrs Rev Weersing of Hull.
Others of the large relationship are descended from EJ schoten, uncle of DJ and John who settle at Holland MIchigan. The oldest in the picture is Mrs H Beltman, 79 years and Sohn Scholten, the next oldest. They are in the left center of the picture. All of the early settlers came from Zutphen, Netherlands. Three hundred and thirty of the relatives live in the United States and182 in the old country. The reuions thus far have been held at the John Scholten famr west of Boyden which is centrally located for all to reach easlily and will be held there again next June 20th.
Officers are President C Wissink, Orange City, secretary, Menso Scholten, Boyden, and Herman Scholten of Alton.

"Mrs. Grada S. Beltman, One of County's Oldest Citizens Dies". Mrs. Grada Scholten Beltman was born January 4, 1844 at Laren, Gelderland, The Netherlands. At the age of 22 years she was married at Zutphen, The Netherlands to D.J. Scholten. 10 children were born to this union. In 1868 they came to the United States and lived in Chicago until 1871, when they came to Sioux county settling on a homestead on the southwest edge of Alton./ http://iagenweb.org/
In 1902, Mr. Scholten died and in 1904, his widow married Henry Beltman also of Alton. In 1911 Mr. Beltman died and until 4 years ago she lived alone in Alton and since made her home with her children.
Mrs. Beltman died November 24, 1938 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Henry Aalders. Surviving are the following children: Elizabeth, Mrs. Aalders, Dena, Mrs. J. C. Cambier, both of Alton; Evert J. Scholten of Sheldon; Dr. Dick J. Scholten of Kalamazoo, Mich.; Bert Scholten of Holland, Mich; Henry M. Scholten of Boyden; and Hattie, Mrs. Nick Slager of Doon. Also 24 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 1 sister in the Netherlands.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Reformed church at Alton, of which she was a charter member. Burial was made in Nassau Township cemetery.
