Junk Dealer Bludgeoned and Robbed $200 Hoard Missing in Capac Killing.
State Police held four Detroit junk collectors as suspects in the bludgeon slaying of a 65-year-old recluse near Capac.
The victim, Alphonse D'Hondt, of Riley Township, St. Clair County, had been bound head and foot, slugged with a heavy club and robbed. Neighbors discovered the body about 8:30 a. m. Thursday. They reported seeing three junk dealers' trucks around D'Hondt's one-room shack a short time earlier. All were manned by Negroes, they said. Troopers said that a $200 "nest egg" which D'Hondt had hidden in his home was missing. Also gone were 24 sheets of corrugated roofing which he had purchased recently. In the weeds nearby officers found a three-foot length of lumber. It was bloodstained. Lodged in the St. Clair County Jail are Henry Kennedy, 32, of 1013 Montcalm, and Jafency Brown, 25, of 307 Custer, Detroit. Held in the Oakland County Jail at Pontiac were Percy Cole, 33, of 4601 Riopelle, and Raymond Wendell Coffey, 24, of 2624 Twenty-fourth, Detroit. D'Hondt, a bachelor, operated a small farm between Romeo and Capac. Investigators said that the condition of his home indicated that he lived in extreme poverty.
