Throughout his life music was always a passion for Don, and many people know him as an accomplished trumpet player. He was a proud member of the Notre Dame Marching Band and enjoyed taking the field with his trumpet at alumni events over the years. His college jazz dance band, “Don Gels and the Lettermen”, played at many university events and he was fond of mentioning he once even shared the stage (and a drink) with Count Basie and his Orchestra.
After he retired, Don had more time to devote to music. He played for many years with the New Canaan Town Band at numerous town events. He also played the trumpet for the Bob Button Big Band and the Fairfield Counts band. In addition, he played Taps at Memorial Day events in New Canaan and at private ceremonies. He was also a long-time member of the New Canaan Senior Men’s Club.
In addition to his wife, Lois, Don is survived by five children: Duane and Julie Gels of Annapolis, MD; Kevin Gels of Chicago, IL; Timothy Gels of Norwalk, CT; Carey and Joe McGovern of Wellington, FL; and Matt Gels of Ridgefield, CT; and seven loving grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Carol.
