Tom was born in 1795 and raised in Skipsea (East Yorkshire, England). Skipsea is a town near the East coast of Yorkshire (East part of England). From Skipsea you have a beautiful seaview, one can look far away over the North Sea. Already as a boy Tom must have looked regular over the sea and have seen sail ships passing by. At the age of 14 or 15 years old he must have left his father's house to follow his dream to become a sailor. His first job on a sail ship would be ship mate. A fewyears later he would have become sailor. After a few years he would have become boatswain. Then a couple years later he became steersman. Some years after that he must have become captain of a sail ship. In 1823-24 we find him in Soerabaya (East Java) as captain of the brig Elizabeth in the service of the brothers Von Franquemont who were the owners of the brig and of a shipyard at Soerabaya. Thetrajectory he was regularly on was from Soerabaya-Menado-Banda. On his sea journeys he would usually trade goods with the inhabitants of the Eastern islands of the Dutch Indies. On 22 January 1825 hewas wedding witness for Johan Hendrik Meijer, born Hamburg, 36 years old, captain of the Schooner Ada, with Josina Buitenveld born Amsterdam 23 years old. In 1833 Thomas Deighton was captain of the Schooner Sirius (load 50 tons). At the island of Ternate his first child Mary Jane was born in about 1829-32 out of his relation with Rosina, native woman of Ternate. Ca. 1840 Captain Thomas Deighton sailing for a trading company in the Moluccas, arrived with his ship several times for Dore on the west coast of New Guinea to trade with the local people. He was captain of the the Bark Rembang (load 73 tons) of which he himself was the owner in 1849-50s. In 1854 Tom was captain of the Steamship Koningin der Nederlanden (Queen of the Netherlands), owner: Nederlandsch Indische Stoomboot-Maatschappij in Batavia). After that he served as captain of several other steamships. Lastly he was captain of the Steamship Samarang Packet1858. About a year before his death Tom decided to put his personal affairs in order. He married Rosina of Ternate, the mother of his many children, at Semarang 14 October 1857. Most likely a couple of days before their marriage took place Rosina had to be baptized, christened as it was the custom in the Dutch Indies when an European man married a native woman. When Rosina was baptized, christened she received her Christian name Alexandrina Anthony. From this day onward she would be known to everyone under this name. Since she was legally married to her European husband, she had obtained the status of an European woman whose rights could not be denied by anyone.Tom Deighton acknowledged his eldest son Nicolaas Thomas Deighton born Ternate 1837 for the second time. He had done this before in 1837. He acknowledged also his youngest sons George and Alexander at Semarang in October 1857. He didn't acknowledge his second eldest son Edward Anthony Deighton, born Ternate 1839 for a second time as he had found a steady job. Tom took all this measures to make sure that his closest family was left well behind after his possible death. Thomas (Tom) Deighton passed away in Pelantoengan (a place in the district of Semarang) on 4 November 1858 during a vacation with his family, very likely at the warm springs of Weleri that is a place near Pelantoengan.
Hij overleed tijdens een vakantie met zijn gezin in de plaats Pelantoengan (residentie Semarang).
