At the age of 13, Petrus joined the University of Utrecht as a student of Professor Jan Bleuland (1756-1838). Beuland had collected a large number of zoological models and preparations. He taught Koning in the art of anatomy and medicine and appointed him as ‘custos anatomicae’ at the Theatrum Anatomicum at Lange Nieuwstraat in 1807. This meant Koning now managed the anatomical collection and conducted his own anatomical dissections. When the Theatrum was moved to Janskerkhof in 1815 Koning had already been appointed as ‘presector’ of the professor, preparing all his dissections.
In 1816 Professor Suerman suggested to Koning to create anatomical wax models. Suerman learned about this new technique of ceroplastic in Italy and gave lectures on the topic in Utrecht. He asked Koning in 1820 to prepare a wax model of a human skull, which he wanted to use in one of his lectures. This would allow Suerland to show more details than on a drawing without scaring his students with a ‘real’ skull.
Already in that same year Koning entered two wax models at a contest of the Nederlandse Huishoudelijke Maatschappij (1815-1836). Afer Koning won the gold medal, his wax art really took off. The Huishoudelijke Maatschappij organized two exhibitions showcasing Koning’s models, making him a well-known figure. His collection eventually contained over 180 models, including exhibits of birds, fish, amphibians and mammals. From 1826 the collection was also open to the public in the Statenkamer at Janskerkhof. Today, only 45 of the human and animal models have survived. Some of his anatomic models have been used at medical schools through to 1950.
