The many friends of John Henry De Mott were shocked to learn of his sudden death on Monday night at his home on Tenafly Road. Mr De Mott seemed in perfect health until about a week ago, when he choked while eating an apple. The strain was so terrific that a heart collapse ensued from which he was unable to rally.

Mr. De Mott attended school in the little old stone school house still standing on the northwest corner of Tenafly road and Ivy Lane in Highwood. He later attended Stevens Institute of Technology at Hoboken. He had always taken a keen interest in civic affairs and was one of the road commissioners of the township before the Borough of Tenalfy was formed, and at that thime was instrumental in laying out and improving Jay Street, which is now known as River Edge Road. For several terms he served as a menber of the Borough Council of Tenafly, and during that time was the chairman of the road comittee. Later he as appointed as postmaster and served in that capacity for four years. he has held many offices in the Royal Areamum?, and was charter member of the Knickerbocker Country Club. Mr. De Mott has always been active in the Tenafly Presbyterian Church from its earliest days, his father having been a charter member. He was a gentleman of the old school in the true sence of that expression, and he had all of the sturdy characteristics of his forebears.
The line between right and wrong was well defined in his mind, and he was always courageously and forcefully fighting for the right. Although troubles bore heavily upon him in recent years, his neighbors and friends were always met with his gental smile and hearty laughter. He was known to his many friends as "John" even to those of the next generation in whose mouth the more familiar tern showed no lack of respect, but expressed the love and esteam in which he was held.
