In 1903, Conan Doyle was also created Knight of Grace of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, a British royal order of chivalry first constituted in 1888 by royal charter from Queen Victoria.
On 24 October 1902, Conan Doyle was knighted by King Edward VII at Buckingham Palace. He was honored for his service to the British Crown during the Boer War, especially his writings to defend the British Army against accusations of war crimes by the South African Boers, descendants of Dutch settlers. The British were accused of participating in rape, torture and the establishment of concentration camps. In a 1900 publication entitled, The Great Boer War, and in a 1902 book, The War in South Africa: Its Cause and Conduct, Conan Doyle responded to the charges leveled against the British.
