November 28th, 1862 at age 14. He was naturalized in Santa Cruz in 1871 and I believe he worked
there as clerk in the store of Schwartz & Goldtree until about October 1871. Afterwards he worked as
clerk in San Luis Obispo as partner in the store of the
Goldtree Bros. most likely until 1877.

“The drought was severe in 1894, with no relief the next year, and in those days before irrigation the farmers and ranchers had little or no wherewithal with which to pay their bills. Goldtree had personal difficulties as well as business embarrassments, so he opted out by drinking strychnine.”
