Her father owned a prestigious clothing store on Steindamm and enabled his daughter and two sons Ernst and Robert to have a childhood in a well-off environment. Irene Guthmann attended the monastery school up to the one-year exam. Talented as a singer and actor, she then received private training for a stage career.
As early as 1929 she had married the lawyer and co-owner of the men's clothing factory J. & M. Guthmann Hans Guthmann and lived with him for a time in Stettin, Pomerania, Poland, but mostly in Hamburg. The marriage was divorced again in 1937. Hans Guthmann went into exile in Bolivia in 1938, so that she no longer received any maintenance payments from him, but instead lived from the support of her parents in addition to occasional own income and her dowry.
n 1938/1939 Guthmann had to pay a considerable sum to the German Reich in the form of a uJewish property levyu. In 1941, the transfer of 40,000 RM to the USA cost 96 percent of this sum. With only a few hundred dollars, she soon had to take care of her own living in the USA. Since she did not speak the English language, she was no longer able to practice her profession as a singer, as she later stated in her reparation proceedings and therefore, after two months of unemployment, took a position in a lemonade essence factory. She then worked as a waitress in a suburb of New York, but changed employers several times until she became a saleswoman in a New York women's and children's clothing store in 1945. She was very ill during this period and suffered a nervous breakdown when she learned of the violent death of her parents and brother Robert after the end of World War II.
In 1956 Guthmann submitted an application for compensation in Hamburg, the various partial applications of which led to a pension payment and capital compensation (StAHH GuthmannIC). In 1957 she stayed in Hamburg for a while, presumably to promote the processing of her application. To what extent she was able to take up employment after this point in time remains unclear.
