According to Uncle Jack, Herman was born in 1849. In Lithuania, Herrmann Glass was in the lumber business. In San Francisco he was a self-employed glazier. He had no shop of any consequence.
My mother said My Grandfather Glass was a tall man. I think he had kind of reddish hair. They used to, grandfathers used to like to put us on their laps and hear their watches tick, that was the big thing in those days. They had a watch with a chain in their pockets. And he was also a glazier. Of course he didnt do as well as Grandfather Cohen. They lived in an apartment, they were never able to buy a house. He didnt have a shop. But I guess he worked for himself too. But Uncle Nate, that was Big Uncle Nate, he helped him out as much as he could. He was a good son.
I don't know anything about the relationship between Herrmann and Esta Glass. This was principally because they did not speak English and I was so little with them. As a child of 4 or younger and the Glasses lived in a flat on Bush Street across from St. Dominic's Church (I think). I remember sitting on his knee while he held his watch to my ear to hear it tick. He smelled of whiskey and Sardines. He was a big man. I understand he worked at glazing but had no shop.
Miriam Lancer said that her grandfather, Herrmann Glass was related to the Edwards family. She said: Herrmann Glass had cousins, the Edwards family. And the Edwards family has several daughters. One of the daughters was Esther Davis . She married someone named Davis and her son was Dr. Julian Davis . Hes still around. Hes retired now. I believe that Rueben used to go to him for medical purposes. Then there was another sister, Monti Zeiler . I remember her daughter Beverly when she was a little girl. We used to see her on Geary Boulevard, Geary Street. Another sister was Ida Gordon . And Ida Gordons husband was Leo Gordon who had the restaurant in the Ferry Building for many years.
