"GOLDSTEIN--N.GOLDSTEIN PIONEER OF COUNTY, DIES. Was perhaps oldest surviving merchant in Butte County. Death Unexpected and casts gloom over Oroville friends. Nathan GOLDSTEIN, perhaps the oldest surviving merchant in the country, one of its foremost citizens and property owners and a director since 1892 of the First National Bank of this city, suddenly passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sidney SHIREK at San Anselmo, Marin county last night, according to a message received here this morning. Mrs. GOLDSTEIN and the one daughter were present at the bedside when the end came. Death Unexpected. Yesterday Henry W.GOLDSTEIN received a letter from his mother telling him that his father was ill, but that the usual remedies were being used and this complete recovery was expected. He was dumbfounded this morning when he received a telegram announcing the demise. Nathan GOLDSTEIN was a resident of Oroville since 1856, when he opened a store in this city and since that time he has been actively identified with the citys business. He amassed a fortune and at the time of death was a heavy owner of property in Butte county and in San Francisco, California, USA The first interests of the land of his choice have always been his and he was prominently identified with the growth of the county. He enjoyed a wide acquaintance in the county and the news of his sudden death received here this morning cast a gloom over those with whom he was acquainted. Nathan GOLDSTEIN was a native of Kepno, Germany where he was born seventy-eight years ago. In 1851 he came to this country and reached New York, USA in November of that year. In the following year he came to San Francisco, California, USA For several years he travelled through Butte, Sierra and Plumas counties selling merchandise. Site of first store, In March, 1856, GOLDSTEIN opened up a store on the site now occupied by the Union Hotel Annex. Since that timek he has continued in business in this city. The family resided in this city until about two years ago at the handsome home opposite the courthouse at the corner of Bird and Lincoln streets. At that time the family removed to San Francisco, California, USA, where they have since made their home. Deceased is survived by his widowed an seven children, all of whom are grown. The children are Mrs. J.W. RAPHAEL, Mrs. R.B. MOORE, Mrs. Lulu DAVIS, H.W. GOLDSTEIN, Mrs. Sidney SHIREK, Alfred E. GOLDSTEIN, and Mrs. Murray KATZ, all of San Francisco, California, USA Alfred GOLDSTEIN, who has been in charge of the local store, left on the Western Pacific train this forenoon for San Anselmo. Death Overtakes Early Resident of Oroville, Nathan Goldstein, who since 1853 has made his home in Oriville, Cal,d who helped make history in Butte Country fo the past sixty years, died in this city late Wednesday evening after a brief illness. He was 78 years of age and a native of Germany. The deceased was looked upon in lie as one of the most enterprising citizens in all the Feather River district., During the early days of Oroville he was associated in business with such men as Senator Perkins and Judge Grey. Success smiled on him in the mercantile field, and he amassed a considerable fortune. He was a Maspn and Odd Fellow. He is survived by his widowed, 5 daughters and two sons.

Nathan Goldstein Probate Packet (San Francisco file #15993)
Nathan Goldstein wrote his will 1 October 1885, some 28 years year before his death 23 July 1913.
Papers in the packet state he died in San Anselmo (Marin County) although the short obituary states ssin this cityss (San Francisco). One-half his estate was to go to his wife Ernestine (Tina), who was named executrix, and the balance was to be divided evenly among their seven children. The estate was valued at $75,624, about $18,000 in stock and the balance in real estate. There were two developed properties in San Francisco: one bounded by Hayes and Octavia valued at $14,500 and another parcel bounded by Laguna and Pine valued at $11,000. The latter was heavily mortgaged and sold during the course of probate. Property in Butte County was considerable and was assessed at $32,100. In addition to the above, Nathan had transferred $21,500 in real property in Oroville before inheritance tax laws changed. This amount did not go through probate but is described in the report of the Inheritance Tax Appraiser. Probate dragged on for a number of years, primarily because of the number of sizeable claims against it. The largest of these included an unsecured mortgage held by the German Savings and Loan Society, multiple loans by the First National Bank of Oroville and two notes to A. Shirek and Sons. During the course of probate, daughter Charlotte Katz died (21 March 1916, probate File #37146), as did daughter Lulu Davis (d 16 Jan 1925, file #42834, below). In each instance, their share of the estate went to their mother, Tina. At the time of her fathersss death, Lulu Davis was a patient at Livermore Sanitarium (a facility for alcohol and drug abuse and the treatment of ssphobias.ss). In October 1923, ten years after probate was opened, the surviving children, Henrietta Moore, Henry W. Goldstein, Florence Raphael, Gertrude Shirek and Alfred E. Goldstein transferred to Tina their right and interest in their fathersss estate. ---

A.Nathan Goldstein was born in Prussia 1836 in Kepno in the province of Poznan, came to the USA arriving 28;June;1852 on ship New Orleans and was in Oroville, Butte, California, USA by July 1860 census. He came to USA the year after his 3-year older brother Abraham. In 1865 Nathan married Ernestina Asher (born 1849 also from Kepno). They produced Florence b. 1867 married J.W.Raphael (owned the store Raphaels in San Francisco and his father married Ernestina's sister) and had 4 kids, Henry W. 1868 married Litta Jacobson no kids; Lulu;Louisa 1870 married David Davis one son; Ettie;Violet 1873 married Rutherford Baker Moore 1 son and George Raphael no kids; Gertrude 1875 who married Sydney Shirek 2 daughters; Alfred E. 1877 briefly married Ethel Schmeide; and Charlotte 1881 married Morris Andrew Katz no kids who worked a lot in Asia. A servant lived with them Genet Strang 1857 (born California, USA of Scottish parents), descendents who still live in Oroville. By 1867 he owned A.Goldstein & Bro. dry goods and clothing. The brothers split around end of 1970s. Nathan called his store Great Eastern Dry Goods House in 1880, then by 1890 City of Berlin, Brandenburg, Germany, then N.Goldstein & Son. He was friends of Edward A.Kusel (1827), Carl Kusel, Benjamin Marks ( also from Kepno, Wlkp., Poland 1855), and partners with Max Brooks (from Silesiaa;Silesiaa;Silesia, Polandnn aged 24), friend of Hirsch Cohn, rented from Samuel Ostroski.
