Goshen News, Indiana 1970; Congregation was organized 3 Sep 1878 and a building bought at corner of S 6th and Washington Streets. First officers elected at the meeting at the home of Jacob Mich (sic), were N.Caminsky, S.Meyer, A.Kaatz (sic), J.Gumbinsky, M.Meyer, Aaron Cohen, Harris Weinstein Rabbi. Disbanded in 1932. Most of the prominent names are gone from Goshen business activity today."

He immigrated to the U.S. in the 1850’s and naturalized in New York either in 1858 (per his later voter registration in Chicago), or 1860 (per a naturalization record for a Jacob Mish, born in Prussia, living at 67 Monroe St in NYC as of July 12, 1860. The witness listed on that naturalization was Pinkus Monash, a surname similar to the maiden name of the bride on a March 11, 1860 New York marriage record for a Jacob Mish from Prussia and a Hanchen Monarh–a surname that corresponds with some later vital records of their children. This may therefore be our Jacob’s marriage, although later records also refer to Mish’s wife as Hannah Kaskel. The 1860 census has a Jacob and “Harriett Misch” in NYC, both age 25, both born Germany, and Jacob listed as a clothier. Based on the birth dates of their children (Lucy, Max, and Sarah) as listed in census records, Jacob and Hannah Mish lived in New York State for at least the years 1862-67, probably in NYC. Jacob is listed in the 1860 NYC Directory as a merchant at 81 Mott, and the 1861-64 NYC directory has a Jacob Mish living at 259 E Broadway. (Charles and Falk Mish are also in that Directory, with Charles probably being Jacob’s brother who later came with him to Indiana.) In the 1865-68 NYC Dir, Jacob and Isaac Mish are both listed as living at 265 E Broadway, and J. Mish & Brother, clothiers, at 188 Fulton.
