In 1868, Sarah Marks, one of Benjamin's two daughters, was about twentyyears old and married Adolph Cohn, sixteen years her senior, and in 1871 her sister Rosa married Adolph's brother Simon. The Cohn families made their homes in Downieville for some years and the Marks families and many of their descendants remained in Oroville for the duration of their lives.

Adolph and Simon Cohn, whom I discovered in the Downieville census. Theywere perhaps a year apart in age, both born in the early 1830's in the town of Kepno, Wlkp., Poland . Adolph emigrated first, around 1854, and Simon followed three years later. The enterprising fellows made their way to Marysville, a booming river port town supplying provisions for the northern mines. Adolph clerked for Morris and Max Bromberger, fellow Prussian emigrants, and Simon was employed by them as a peddler of wares. In 1860 Adolph was naturalized in Yuba County, where Marysville is situated.
