"Not close to his father, a dominant man. Student of a student of FranzLiszt and practiced 4 hours a day. Deep love and respect for his mother; a very good man, devoted to his wife and children; he would do anything for them." His daughter Margaret Elayne Raphael.
No obit found; searched the Contra Costa Times, Richmond Independent and the Martinez Gazette and found nothing published on his death.
"My mother was Margaret Aileen Peacock Raphael, the daughter of Corbet Alfred and Mary Brookfield (ssss) Peacock. I think her father was from Manchester, England and her mother from London, Canada. I knew these grandparents well but remember very little of their earliest background. Yes, my mother was born in Denver, Arapahoe, Colorado, USA.My father was Eugene (Gene) William Raphael. I knew his parents at a very early age but not well enough to give you further information. I know they lived in San Francisco. My oldest sister was Virginia Aileen Raphael. She became ill with tuberculosis and died when she was seventeen, almost eighteen. I was twelve at the time. My next sister was Miriam Patricia Raphael; she was always known as Patricia. She too died, from an accident, at an early age, eighteen and almost nineteen. I had entered the Holy Names Convent in Oakland just three months before Pat died.We had a younger sister, Joan, who was seven years younger than I. My mother became quite ill soon after Joan was born and my mothers family took Joan because she was only a tiny baby. When my mother died after a long illness, her family adopted Joan and gave her the surname, Peacock. She became Joan Peacock but was our blood sister (for your genealogy).I was baptized and known as Margaret Elayne Raphael, but on becoming a Sister, received the name Sister Mary Herbert. For your records, I am 91 years old and have been a Holy Names Sister since July, 1934. When I first heard that you had e-mailed from NZ, I thought you might have been related to the Peacock side of the family since my great-uncle Walter A. Peacock, my grandfather (his brother) and his family had all lived;worked;owned a business in Australia for many years."
Eugene William Raphael, b 1 May 1890, d 18 January 1980, Lafayette, Contra Costa County, California, USA. At the time of his World War I draft registration in July 1917, Eugene was married and living in Honolulu and claimed three children. The following year in May of 1918, his name appears on the passenger list of the Niagara, arriving in Victoria, BC, from Hawaii. Some seven months later his wife and daughters also traveled to the states, creating a better, although possibly not accurate, record of their identity. In the 1920 census of Honolulu, Eugene, his wife
Margaret and three daughters were for some unaccountable reason recorded as octoroon. He was then an accountant for a cigar company in Honolulu. Eugene W. Raphael and wife Aileen appeared in the 1924 Oakland city directory, he an auditor. Exhaustive searching did not turn any of them up in the 1930 census, although the two younger girls both graduated from Holy Names High School in Oakland in 1933. Daughter Virginia was listed on the passenger list as having been born in San Francisco, 25 July 1911, although this birth was not found in the California, USA birth index. The birth of a daughter on this date, however, was noted in the neWroclaw, Silesia, Polandaper. Voter registration records show Eugene in Oakland in 1922 onward, and indeed, he and his unnamed wife, along with his mother and sister were mentioned in the Oakland Tribune in 1922. The California, USA Death Index carries the death of an Eileen Raphael, age 34 in Alameda County, 21 August 1924, spouse E.W.
According to Aunt Mary, Gene was very good looking. He was about 6 years younger than Aileen, who was his tutor. Gene was godfather to Aunt Mary. He appeared on the census of 1910 at his father's house, San Francisco, San Francisco County, California, USA.106 A census listed Eugene as head of household at Oahu Island, Hawaii, USA, on 5 Jan 1920
