Of strongly colonialsympathies, he led the protest against the Stamp Act (1765), and in1774 was sent as a delegate to the first Continental Congress. Heproposed the election of Washington as commander-in-chief, and was"the colossus of the debate' on the Declaration of Independence. Heretired from Congress in 1777, only to be sent to France and Holland ascommissioner from the new republic, and in 1785--8 was minister toEngland. In 1789 he became vice-president under Washington. They werere-elected in 1792, and in 1796 Adams was chosen president by theFederalists. Defeated on seeking re-election in 1800, he retired to hishome at Quincy.
