The original spelling was Heordlyp, which meant, "gate over which harts (stags) leap". A source that I have says that the Osbornes were granted lands in Kent, by King William for distinguished service in the Battle of Hastings. I have also been told that the Osbornes owned Hartlip Place from the 11th century to at least 1878. I don't have the primary sources for this info, but the Centre for Kentish Studies has Osborne family records for Hartlip, from 1282-18th century, and I hope to get into them in the future.oorde" in his will, but I haven't been able to find out anything about it, yet".
