The Kansas Historical Society had a listing for a Lambert G. Pouwals who had filed for the "bounty" that the state of Kansas had awarded all veterans who had served in the military during WWI. Dad had filed for this bounty and a copy of his filing is in the "box". I don't know what the nature of the box is: it could be a simple envelope. At any rate I have paid for it to be shipped to me and I will then scan the document and post it on line. MOST IMPORTANT:
1. We now know what Dad's official last name was "POUWALS". This is confirmed by the above and by the official military documents I received from the military records depository.
2. The following questions remain:
a. When was the name changed to Powell?
b. What country are dad's father and mother from? One census form (1910) lists Germany and another (1920) lists Holland. I suspect that this was a deliberate move on the part of our ancestors to distance themselves from their German roots. Further distancing was accomplished by changing the name to Powell which is essentially English.
Dad served in the WWI in the Navy. He said he was stationed on a minesweeper in the North Atlantic. I have a postcard from England that he sent to mom about 1918. He mentioned that he was both cook and gunner's mate. He manned the machine gun on the stern of the ship. When the pincers cut the mine cable, it floated to the surface and he would rake it with fire until it detonated.
One story dad told me was about a ship he was on when the captain was murdered by one of the crew. Not sure of details.
Dad swore in German "godfadummit" was his version. Thought he was Dutch but some sources (census records 1900) show that his ancestors immigrated from Germany.
He was a boxer in the Navy and had the frame and muscles to prove it.
His nickname was Dutch.
Dad signed the 1916 Postcard "Pauvals" but I have had no luck tracing that surname.
The ship photos are the DD 48 USS Parker, a destroyer. Dad served towards the end of the war.
