The civil parish covers an area of 587 hectares and the 2001 Census recorded a parish population of 351 people. Just to the north of the village is a knuckerhole which, according to legend, was once the home of a dragon, the Knucker. The 11th-century Saxon{{#invoke:Footnotes|sfn}} Church of England parish church of St Mary Magdalene contains a tombstone called the Slayer's Slab, which is supposed to be from the tomb of the dragonslayer. The church has a ring of six bells and the local public house is called The Six Bells. There is a view of the South Downs from the north side of the church.
