This collection covers nearly 65,000 individuals, the majority of which were either Roman Catholic or Jewish. Please note, only individuals who were registered prisoners in the camp were recorded in the death certificate books. According to the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the estimated number of victims who perished in Auschwitz between 1940 and 1945 is between 1.1 million and 1.5 million people. The majority of these victims were killed immediately upon arrival, and were never officially registered in the German record books. Thus, their deaths were not recorded. This collection provides information on just a small percentage of the deaths that occurred at Auschwitz.
