NOTE: Martin P-L writes:His rent book is in the Oxford Record Office.________________________________________________________TFL, Oct, 2003: From Boyd's "Inhabitants of London" (in the SoG,London), I found an entry, no 14479, for a John Cross. It looksextremely like this is for the man we know as Josiah Cross, possibly from some corruption of Jos to Jon.Boyd's entry was principally taken from the Registry of MarriageLicence Allegations by the Bishop of London 1611-1829, publishedin the 19th cent by the Harleian Society as Volume 25, part II.On page 279 is to be found:"1647, Oct 25: John Crosse of Greenwich, Kent, Merchant,Bachelor, 22, son of William Crosse, of same, merchant, whoconsents, & Frances Garrard of East Greenwich, Kent, Spinster,18, dau of Sir [blank] Garrard, Knt, decd; consent of her motherDame [blank] Garrard of Eltham, Kent, Widow; at St Barthol. theLess."This sounds as if Frances' mother had taken herself and heryoungest children off away from the family home after herhusband had died.Obviously the next step is to obtain a copy of the originalmarriage licence record to see what the name there actually(appear to) say. Further, the marriage record at St Bartholomewthe Less may (just) still exist and finally Boyd's entry alsogives some children (to a John Crosse, I wonder?) who arerecorded from the register of St Mary le Bow; both of these needfollowing up.TFPL, Late Oct 2003: The Londone Diocese marriage Allegationsare in the Manuscript section of the Guildhall Library. The Bartholomew the Less parish records are in the archives ofSt Bartholomew's Hospital, Smithfield, London. But thismarriage isn't; the archivist kindly reported that the church ofSt Bartholomew by the Exchange was sometimes known as StBartholomew the Less and those records are in the GuildhallLibrary.________________________________________________________TFPL, Nov 2003: Found the near illegible film of the marriagelicences and Josiah's names start's clearly with "Jo" andcontinues with a massive squiggle, easily taken to be Johannes, and which could be equally easily "Josiah". William Crosse thefather is reasonably legible and so is added to this database. The blanks for the parents of Frances are undoubtedly due to theapplication being made by Mark Cottle on behalf of the happycouple and this Mark might not have realised he had to producethe forenames._______________________________________________________TFPL, Sep 2004, found on Ancestry.com (any connection?):England: Canterbury - Administrations in the Prerogative Courtof Canterbury, 1649-1654 Index of Acts of Administration in the Prerogative Court ofCanterbury 1649-1654 County: General Country: England Crosse, Josias, St. Olaves, Southw., Surr. 1653-4 2 442 _________________________________________________________
