Life Sketch
John Calkins was born in 1661 in Norwich, Connecticut, a son of John Calkins and Sarah Royce.
He married Abigail Birchard on 23 October 1690. The couple removed to Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut about 1695.
Constable of Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut in 1698.
Corporal of the first militia in Lebanon in 1700.
In his senior years, he relocated to the Philipse Patent, Dutchess County, New York, with his sons John Calkins (relocated about 1739) and Jeremiah Calkins (1739), and his son-in-law Abel Wright (1744) as well as others from Connecticut.
John Calkins died in Southern Precinct, Dutchess County, New York (present-day Southeast, Putnam County, New York) in 1745 (after 29 January 1745). His son-in-law Abel Wright died the following year. Southern Precinct at the time encompassed all of present-day Putnam County, but the family resided near the present-day hamlet of Milltown in the Town of Southeast.
----
NOTE: John Calkins (1661 1745) has erroneously been attributed with being one of the founders of Norwich, Connecticut in 1659, an honor which belongs instead to his father John Calkins (and whose name is inscribed on the founders' monument in Founders' Cemetery in Norwich). Neither man died in December 1755 (which instead is when Samuel Calkins, Jr. died in Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut).
