LifeSketch: Ormus Eaton Bates was born 25 March 1815 at Ellisburg, Jefferson County, New York, USA. He was the son of Cyrus Bates and Lydia Herrington. He became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints July 4,1836, being baptized by Orson Pratt at Henderson, Jefferson County, New York, USA, and held the office of Elder until his death.ried Phoebe M. Matison in New York, USA, and later Morilla Spink at Nauvoo, Illinois, and Matilda Reeves at Winter Quarters, Nebraska. In Salt Lake City he married Ellen Mecham, Margrette Busenbark, SarahHymas and Sarah Weir. Ormus by occupation was a stockraiser, miner, and farmer, and was a pioneer of Tooele County.tes, the son of Ormus, was eighteen years of age he discovered a vein of rich silver ore which he named the "Mountain Lion" which he and his father located upon as co-owners. Many thousandsof dollars worth ofsilver was taken from the surface of the mine without blasting. The son sold his interest in the mine to his father for $10,000. A Salt Lake mining company offered Ormus $40,000 for the property, butOrmus held out for $50,000. In the meantime, much money was spent in developing the mine, but the pockets of ore became exhausted.government, the price of silver became too low for profitable mining,and Ormus was left heavily in debt. His cattle and sheep helped to ease his financial condition, but the worry and trouble undermined his health, and he was suddenly stricken with heart failure and died at Rush Valley,
