(Email from Emily's sister Catherine's great (?) granddaughter): I found Emily Macklin's baptismal record, which means that we now know where they came from in Ireland. That takes us all back another generation.
There were baptismal records for three other siblings, too, but not for Catherine, Emily's sister. One record, that of Ellen's, might be for the sister we know of as Mary Ball Smith, having been widowed and then remarried.
I'm attaching what I found. The actual record, which will be hard to read for you, can be found on the National Library of Ireland website. It is best to go into the parish Monaghan as that will take you right to the records.
I've contacted the local historical society, who graciously explained the difference in the names. I couldn't figure out why the records had McSkean or Thornton, etc. and contacted them for an answer, which is attached. I contacted the society today about doing more research, too. I want to know the name and location of the church they were baptized in and perhaps a marriage record, although they were probably married elsewhere and the records there might not go back as far. Next month, 10 million Irish records are to be released on Find My Past, so perhaps we'll find something. Although I had search before for the baptismal records of Emily and Catherine, they were not in the online subscription I have until just a short while ago.
