James MacPherson of Ardersier, was employed confidentially by Mr Campbell of Cawdor, with whom he sometimes visited Wales. According to the entry in the family bible, "James MacPherson and Margaret Loggie were married in Cheriton Church, in Pembrokeshire, upon the 14th day of August, by Rev Mr Henry Rowe, 1777.
James appears to have been appointed agent or factor on the Cawdor estate on or near his marriage. In 1773 when Dr Johnson and Boswell visited Cawdor, Boswell writes "Mr White, a Welshman, who has been many years factor (ie Steward) on the estate of Calder, drank tea with us last night". This shows that Mr MacPherson was appointed after that date.
James was a Captain in the militia, and a magistrate for the county of Inverness, and he seems to have taken an active share in public affairs as his name is to be found in all important meetings of the Magistracy. He aided in raising the
78th Highlanders, and several of his sons obtained commissions by bringing in quotas of men (as was then the custom), raised by their father's interest.
He died and was buried in the old cemetry of Ardersier, (Kirton). After his death, his widow continued to reside at Ardersier until her own death, in November 1834.
