LifeSketch: "Donald MacLeod, who is sometimes referred to as Pioneer Donald, and who is the common ancestor of so many people of the Broad Cove area, was born in Eigg in 1752. As young man, he married Jessie MacPherson, also of Eigg and in 1791 they came to North America with their family and settle in the Cape d'Or, Horseshoe Bay area near Parsboro. He was 39 when he came to Nova Scotia and he remained in Parsboro for some 17 years. At the end of this period he and his wife seemed dis-satisfied with their lives in the Parsboro area and decided to make yet another start. Their dissatisfaction was based largely of the religious environment of the area. In 1808, Donald MacLeod, his wife, Jessie MacPherson, and their seven daughters and two sons walked from Parsboro to the west coast of Cape Breton Island. They brought with them whatever they could carry and brought also six head of young cattle and a horse. Joining them on their walk were some others who had been with them at Parsboro. Among these were members of a Kennedy family, originally from Canna, Scotland, who had come with them o the same vessel to Parsboro in 1791. The MacLeod's eldest daughter, Mary, was already married to a member of this family, Donald Kennedy, at the time of the journey.upied by the MacLeods of St. Rose. later Donald MacLeod took out another grant at Broad Cove Marsh and the name of the area was subsequently changed to Dunvegan in the memory of the MacLeods' ancestral home in Skye. To register his deeds it was necessary to walk to Sydney. The land was deeded to the 'Colony' of Cape Breton which was not then a part of the province of Nova Scotia. Cape Breton was re-annexed to Nova Scotia in 1820 and the land was then a part of Nova Scotia an new deeds were obtained. At the time of the 'walk' Donald MacLeod was 56 years of age.er, he and the younger members of the family settled permanently at Dunvegan. His house was on the land now occupied by his great great grandson, Murdock MacLeod. His oldest son, John, who was a mature man at the time of the journey, married Anne MacKinnon and remained on the land at St. Rose.rea" July 29, 1979 Dunvegan, Nova Scotia
