LifeSketch: Settled in Canonicut Island, Jamestown Township, RI on land received by his Father. He was a representative to RI general assembly from 1678-1715. He was one of the early proprietors of East Greenwich Township, RI. Was an influential minister of the Society of Friends. Died of Yellow Jaundice and other distemper's. "History of the Slocums" by Charles E Slocum, MD.where he received land from his father, October 25, 1678. The following year he was deputy to the general court and served in that office most of the time until his death in 1715, being part of the time speaker of the house. He presided at the first election held in Jamestown, April 1, 1682, and was afterward "counsellman," head warden and moderator. He was among the early proprietors of East Greenwich, and drew lot No. 36 in the first division of land there, June 6, 1700. By act of assembly he was authorized to establish a ferry between North Kingstown and Canonicut, in May 1707. He gave one acre of land and the meetinghouse in South Kingstown by deed of August 15, 1710, and on September 27 of the same year gave land for a meetinghouse in Jamestown. He was among the most active and faithful of the Friend's ministers, and died April 13, 1715. He married Mary Thurston, born 1657, daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Mott) Thurston. She survived him more than seventeen years, and died November 16, 1732, in Jamestown.
