Gladys's father is believed to be Harry Utting, a good friend of the family. Harry was married with three children. Gladys was brought up in a loving home by her grand parents William and Ellen. She believed she was their daughter, the last of 12, not Amy's. Ellen and Gladys lived with her Aunt Clara and Peter Jensen when William (her grandfather) died. The Jensens lived in Church Street Onehunga so Gladys was transfered from school in Eden terrace to St Joseph's in Onehunga where she passed her Matriculation exams. Gladys was a very good neeedleworker and made beautiful clothes and hats. She was a very popular, attractive young woman and had many friends. She used to go to dances run by the church and attended one in the Orphan's Hall in Onehunga where Jim Cunningham was playing in the band. She fell in love with him, but the family didn't approve because he didn't have a "proper" job. Peter Jensen threw her a 21st party at the Orphans Hall that was attended by friends and family. She and Jim eloped, were married at lunch time in the Auckland registry office. Gladys went back to live at the Jensen's until her wedding ring was discovered in her hanky draw by her mother (grandmother). The secret was out. She and Jim moved in with his mother and raised a family. They moved from house to house in Onehunga. Jim worked in relief work when the war broke out, building the stone walls at Waikaraka Park. The family settled in Arthur Street Onehunga and raised their six children. Gladys made all the children's clothes and made some amazing fancy dress costumes for the children. When Gladys and Jim retired they had many happy trips to the South Island. Gladys enjoyed photography for a hobby and took some beautiful shots of scenery and family. She belonged to the Onehunga Photography Club and won many prizes. She was also an active walker and was very fit until she was about 90 walked everywhere. She spent 20 years in Manningville retirement village in Onehunga where she "ran" the library... as an avid reader she was always on the hunt for new book baragains for the library, and would torment late returners of the books! When it became difficult to look after herself she shifted to the Christian healthcare in Mt Smart Road, where she passed away.
