Robert became a Chartered Accountant and senior partner in the firm of Steele and Calder, one of the early accounting firms in South Australia. There is a family story that claims the firm was one of the largest in South Australia at the time. He was significantly involved in obtaining a Charter for the profession. In the official history of the Institute of Chartered Accountants ("Without fear or favour" - the official history of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia) Robert is claimed to have been the outstanding figure in the history of the South Australian Institute of Accountants where he was registrar from 1928 to 1951.
Robert practised his profession for 48 years of which 31 years were spent in an administrative role. It is said of him that Robert had a particular interest in educational affairs, being for some time Chairman of the Board of Commercial Studies of the University of Adelaide. Robert also served as Chairman of the Finance Committee of the South Australian Institute of Technology. Robert was awarded the CBE (Companion of the British Empire) in 1956 for his services to the accountancy profession. In commercial affairs he was Chairman of the South Australian Gas Company for 50 years, Chairman of Directors at Gramps Orlando wines, Amscol, and the Queen Victoria Hospital.
