John appears in the Bertie County, North Carolina records about 1730. He married as his second wife, Ann Brown, daughter of William Brown and his wife Martha Gray, daughter of Richard Gray of Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
On Aug 8, 1730 John and Ann of Bertie sold to James Milliken, merchant, of the same county, 150 acres on the south side of Morratuck River, bounded according to the will of William Brown, deceased, and according to the bounds the law doth adjudge. Witnesses: John Brooks, John Joyner.
On Feb 19 1747/48 John deeded to John Branch, Jr. 100 acres "being half of the land that I, John Branch, Sr. took up on Beech Swamp." He signed his deeds John (N) Branch.

Apparently inherited 333 acres on Bear Branch - the original 355 acre tract, as adjusted, less the 20 acres he and his grandmother sold to John Markham. Markham bought the remaining parcel from John Branch in September 1761. In June 1766 John Branch, "[grand]son and heir of James Branch, deceased," bought 100 acres in Chesterfield County from Thomas Branch - probably Thomas Branch - for £50 that he sold to James Lyle in July 1769.
It is tradition that John Branch married Martha Louise Henry and moved to Halifax County, North Carolina, soon after 1769. Among his sons and grandsons were several very prominent North Carolinians.
