Gloucester District Historical Society Fifth Journal - 1980, an article "Made and Mended Roads for 50 Years" about Tom Farley, Roadmaker. Tom is "now nearly 73", so born about 1907.
"When 21, Tom entered the employ of the Gloucester Shire Council. Mr Tom Carter was then President; Mr Rudd, engineer and Mr George Sadler, the shire clerk. 'My first job was picking up napped road metal , with Mr Bill Ratley as our boss.' The wages were 7/- a day, for 48 hours a week, knocking off work at 1pm Saturday. 'Some while after when the pay went up to 8/- we really thought we were amongst the big money' Tom smilingley said.
Died at daughter Eleanor's house; Methodist service there. Married by Rev G Bushforth.
